Renewing Car Insurance and Registration in Dubai: Order, Documents and Timing

By 800 Motor · Updated

Renew in this order: insurance first, then the vehicle test if your car needs one, then the registration. RTA will not renew registration without valid insurance and, for cars that need it, a passed test. Clear any traffic fines first, because unpaid fines can block renewal.

To compare cover for your car, get car insurance quotes in Dubai.

The order that works

  1. Renew or buy car insurance. The policy must be valid on the day of renewal and, ideally, for the full registration year.
  2. Check and pay traffic fines on the RTA or Dubai Police app.
  3. Pass the vehicle test, if your car needs one.
  4. Renew the registration with RTA, online, in the app or at a service centre.

Documents you need

  • Emirates ID of the registered owner (or trade licence for a company car)
  • Valid car insurance, usually linked to RTA electronically by the insurer
  • Passed vehicle test result, where required (also linked electronically)
  • Current registration card (mulkiya)
  • No outstanding fines, or payment of them at renewal

Which cars need a test

New private cars are exempt from the technical test for their first few years after registration; after that, a pass is needed at every renewal. RTA sets the exact age rule and can change it, so check your car’s status in the RTA app before booking. Book vehicle testing in Dubai.

Timing, grace period and fines

You can renew shortly before the registration expires; there is no benefit in waiting until the last day, because insurance and testing take time. Driving with expired registration is an offence that brings a fine and can lead to the car being impounded, and fines for late renewal add up. RTA publishes the current grace period and fine amounts; check them before your renewal date.

If the car fails the test

The test report lists what failed: often tyres, lights, brakes, emissions or windscreen damage. Fix those items and return for a retest, which is usually quicker than the first test. A pre-test inspection catches most of these before you go. If the fix is a tyre, wheel alignment or repair, we can do it before the retest.
