Comprehensive vs Third-Party Car Insurance in the UAE

By 800 Motor · Updated

Third-party insurance is the legal minimum in the UAE and pays for damage you cause to other people and their property, not your own car. Comprehensive also pays to repair your car after an accident, theft or fire, usually with an excess. For a new or financed car, comprehensive with agency repair is usually worth it; for an older, low-value car, third-party plus savings often makes more sense.

What actually gets paid when a damaged car comes in

With third-party cover, if the accident was your fault, nobody pays for your car: the repair is yours. If the other driver was at fault, their insurer pays, once the police report shows it.

With comprehensive cover, your insurer approves the repair after a survey, you pay the excess, and the garage is paid directly. The time this takes depends on the insurer, whether parts are in stock, and whether the car goes to an agency or a non-agency garage. See car body and paint repair.

Agency or non-agency repair

Agency repair means the car is fixed at the brand’s dealer workshop with genuine parts. Insurers usually offer it for newer cars, often the first few years, and it costs more. Non-agency repair uses an approved independent garage. For a new car still under the maker’s warranty, agency repair keeps the service history clean and avoids warranty arguments; for an older car, a good non-agency garage is usually fine and the premium is lower.

How car age and value change the choice

  • New or financed car: comprehensive, usually with agency repair. Lenders normally require it.
  • Three to seven years old: comprehensive with non-agency repair is the common middle ground.
  • Older, low-value car: compare the premium with the car’s value. If a total loss would cost you little, third-party may be enough.

Excess (deductible)

The excess is the part of each claim you pay yourself. A higher excess lowers the premium. Some policies set a higher excess for young or newly licensed drivers. Check the figure before you buy, because it is what you pay at the garage.

Non-GCC spec and new Chinese brands

Cars imported from outside the GCC (American, Japanese or Canadian spec) can be harder to insure comprehensively, or come with limits, because parts and repair costs are less predictable. Declare the spec honestly; a mismatch can void a claim.

New Chinese brands such as BYD, Geely, Jetour and Changan are now widely insured, but parts lead times can be longer. Ask how long the insurer allows for repairs and whether a hire car is included. EV owners should check that the policy covers the high-voltage battery.

What is needed at renewal

At renewal you need your Emirates ID, driving licence, the current registration card (mulkiya) and any no-claims letter. Registration cannot be renewed without valid insurance, so renew the policy first. Read renewing car insurance and registration in Dubai and compare car insurance quotes.

Questions drivers ask

Is third-party car insurance enough in the UAE?

It is the legal minimum. It does not pay for your own car, so it suits older, low-value cars better than new ones.

What is agency repair in car insurance?

The car is repaired at the brand dealer with genuine parts. It is usually offered for newer cars and raises the premium.

How much is car insurance in Dubai?

It depends on the car’s value, age and spec, your driving history and the cover chosen. Compare quotes for your car.
