How to Read Your Tyre Size Before Buying in the UAE

Read an example: 225/45 R18

In this example, 225 is the width in millimetres, 45 is the sidewall height as a percentage of that width, R means radial construction, and 18 is the wheel diameter in inches. This is an explanation of the code, not a recommendation for your vehicle.

• Width: copy the first three digits.
• Profile: copy the number after the slash.
• Wheel diameter: copy the number after R.
• Also record the load index, speed symbol and additional markings.

Include the load and speed ratings

The number and letter following the size describe load capacity and speed capability. Two tyres with the same dimensions can have different ratings. Record markings such as XL and any original-equipment approval, then ask the fitter to check them against the vehicle specification.

A higher speed rating is not permission to drive faster. Do not choose a lower specification simply because the tyre appears in a size search.

Check the car as well as the current tyres

Photograph the front and rear sidewalls separately and label which is which. Include the vehicle’s tyre-information label or the relevant handbook entry. If the wheels have been changed, say so before ordering; a catalogue match to the original vehicle may not describe the current setup.

Do not use the maximum pressure printed on the tyre as the vehicle’s recommended inflation pressure. Michelin directs drivers to the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions, normally on its label or in the handbook.

Compare a complete fitted offer

Ask for the tyre brand and model, complete size and rating, quantity, production-date information and availability. Separately confirm fitting, balancing, valves or TPMS work, disposal, taxes and any mobile attendance charge. Ask whether alignment is a separate assessment rather than assuming it is included.

Use the same requested specification for every quote. A lower total can reflect a different tyre model or fewer included services. Once the specification is confirmed, choose your fitting option and appointment with the advisor.
