Leaving Your Car Parked in the UAE: How to Protect the Battery

By 800 Motor · Updated

A parked car keeps drawing a small current for its alarm and computers, and the battery also loses charge by itself, faster in heat. Before leaving a car unused for several weeks, have the battery tested and charged, keep the car locked, and arrange for it to be driven or professionally maintained. If it will not start when you return, request a jump start and a battery test instead of repeated starting attempts.

Why a parked car battery goes flat

Two things drain a battery while the car stands still. The vehicle draws a small standby current for the alarm, central locking, computers and any telematics. Separately, every lead-acid battery slowly discharges by itself. Battery chemistry speeds up as temperature rises, so self-discharge and ageing are faster during a UAE summer than in mild weather.

Accessories add to the load. A dashcam left in parking mode, a tracker or a charger left plugged in can shorten the time a parked car will still start from months to weeks. How long a particular car can stand depends on the battery’s condition, the vehicle and what is connected to it, so there is no single safe number of days.

Before you travel

Arrange a battery test a week or two before you leave. A battery that is already weak will not improve while parked. Battery manufacturer storage guidance is to start from a fully charged battery: a rested reading below about 12.5 V means it should be charged first. Ask the technician to take the reading rather than probing the battery yourself.

  • Lock the car and keep the key away from it so the electronics can go to sleep.
  • Switch off interior lights and unplug chargers and accessories.
  • Ask your installer whether the dashcam parking mode should be disabled.
  • Choose covered or shaded parking where you have the option.
  • Leave a spare key and written access instructions with someone you trust.

While you are away

The simplest protection is use. Ask someone to drive the car for a proper journey of 20 to 30 minutes every couple of weeks. Starting the engine briefly and switching off again takes more from the battery than it returns. Never leave an engine running in an enclosed garage or basement.

For longer absences, a battery maintainer matched to the battery technology can keep it charged where the parking space has a suitable power supply and the vehicle manufacturer allows it. Battery makers advise recharging a stored battery at least every three months. Disconnecting the battery is not a universal answer: many modern cars lose settings, trigger alarms or need procedures afterwards, so follow the owner’s manual or ask a technician first.

Basement, tower and airport parking

Covered parking protects the car from direct sun, but it makes a call-out harder if the battery is flat on your return. Note the level, bay number and nearest pillar before you leave, and check whether building security needs advance approval for a service vehicle. Height limits and visitor access decide whether a technician can reach the car with the right equipment.

If the car will not start when you return

Do not keep cranking. Repeated attempts drain what charge remains. Request a jump start together with a battery and charging-system test. A deeply discharged battery may need a proper charge and a retest before anyone can say whether it has recovered, and some will not.

Do not attempt to jump-start or charge a battery that is swollen, leaking or unusually hot. Step away and ask for professional help. If the battery does need replacing, bear in mind that damage from deep discharge is commonly excluded from battery warranties.

Your enquiry checklist

  • Dates the car will be or was parked
  • Make, model, year and powertrain
  • Battery age and last test result if known
  • Accessories fitted: dashcam, tracker, charger
  • Parking location, level, bay and access rules
