Toyota Hybrid Battery Replacement in the UAE: 12V vs Hybrid Battery, Signs and Cost
By 800 Motor · Updated
Most Toyota hybrids that “will not start” have a weak 12V auxiliary battery, not a failing hybrid pack. The 12V wakes the hybrid system; if it is low, the car will not go to READY. It is a quick, inexpensive replacement. The high-voltage hybrid battery is a different system with different symptoms and a much higher cost.
When the battery does need changing, book car battery replacement in Dubai, or see what your car needs: Toyota battery replacement, Nissan battery replacement, BMW battery replacement, Mercedes battery replacement.
Two batteries, two jobs
Every Toyota hybrid has a large high-voltage battery that drives the electric motor, and a small 12V auxiliary battery that powers the lights, screens, locks and computers. The car uses the 12V battery to switch the hybrid system on. When it is weak, the high-voltage battery can be perfectly healthy and the car still will not start.
Where each battery sits on Camry, RAV4 and Prius
Wherever the 12V battery is, Toyota provides a jump terminal under the bonnet so the car can be boosted without reaching it.
| Model | 12V auxiliary battery | High-voltage hybrid battery |
|---|---|---|
| Camry Hybrid | Under the rear seat or in the boot, depending on generation | Behind or under the rear seat |
| RAV4 Hybrid | Under the bonnet on recent generations | Under the rear seat |
| Prius | In the boot on most generations | Under the rear seat or boot floor |
| Corolla Hybrid | Under the bonnet or rear seat, by generation | Under the rear seat |
Signs of each battery failing
| Symptom | Points to |
|---|---|
| Car will not go to READY; dash lights dim or flicker | 12V auxiliary battery |
| Smart key not detected, doors will not unlock | 12V auxiliary battery |
| Car starts after a jump and is fine afterwards | 12V auxiliary battery |
| Hybrid system warning on the dash | Hybrid battery or hybrid system |
| Petrol engine runs much more than usual, fuel use rises | Hybrid battery losing capacity |
| Charge gauge jumps quickly between full and empty | Hybrid battery losing capacity |
How to jump start a Toyota hybrid
Open the bonnet and find the jump terminal under the fuse box cover, then connect as for any car: red to the terminal, black to an earth point. Press the power button with your foot on the brake; the car should show READY. Do not use a hybrid to jump start another car unless your manual says it is allowed. See how to jump start a car safely.
What each battery costs to replace
A 12V auxiliary battery is a small battery, often AGM, priced in our compact to mid-size band (around AED 300–550 fitted, depending on type and model). It is replaced on-site, wherever the car is parked.
A high-voltage hybrid battery is a different job and a far larger cost, usually handled by a dealer or hybrid specialist. 800 Motor replaces the 12V auxiliary battery and can test it on-site; for a hybrid system warning, we will tell you if the 12V is not the cause so you can book the right diagnosis.
